GEO: The marketing channel your competitors haven't heard of yet

Generative Engine Optimization is how brands get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Here's how it works, and why the window is open right now.

Ask yourself a simple question: when you last needed a service you knew nothing about, a lawyer, an agency, a software tool, did you scroll through ten blue links, or did you ask an AI?

Millions of buyers have already switched. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews now answer the questions that used to end in a search results page. And here’s the part most businesses haven’t realized: those answers name names. When someone asks “who’s the best web design agency for a growing brand,” the AI recommends specific companies.

The discipline of earning those recommendations is called Generative Engine Optimization, GEO.

How AI engines decide who to cite

AI answer engines don’t rank pages the way Google classically did. They synthesize an answer from sources they consider credible, current, and quotable. In practice, getting cited comes down to three things:

  1. Structured, extractable content. AI engines love clear claims, clean headings, FAQs, and data points they can lift directly into an answer. Vague brochure copy is invisible to them.
  2. Authority signals across the open web. Mentions, reviews, directories, and consistent entity information teach the models who you are and what you’re good at.
  3. Content that answers real buyer questions. Not “10 marketing tips”, the actual questions your customers type into a chat box at 11pm.

Why the window is open right now

Classic SEO took two decades to become a knife fight. GEO is early, most local and mid-market businesses have done literally nothing about it. That means the brands that structure themselves for AI visibility this year will be the default answers in their categories for years, the same way early SEO winners owned page one for a decade.

Where to start

Start by measuring. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers would ask, and see who gets named. If it isn’t you, you have a visibility gap, and a head start available while your competitors are still optimizing for a search page that’s slowly emptying out.

That measurement is exactly what our AI Visibility Audit does, by the way. We’ll show you what the machines say about you, and what it would take to change the answer. And when you’re ready to close the gap for real, our AI Search Visibility service is the whole discipline: the fixes, the citable content, and the monthly proof. For the hands-on version, we also wrote a step-by-step guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT.
